Macronutrients, commonly referred to as “macros,” are three important components of the foods and drinks we consume. Macronutrients fall into 3 categories - protein, carbohydrate, and fat. They are the main sources of energy (calories) that enter our bodies (alcohol also provides our body with calories but it is considered a drug, not a nutrient). Protein and carbohydrates provide 4 calories and fat provides 9 calories of energy for every gram we consume. Beyond providing energy, each macronutrient has additional functions as well.
